Bambu X2D Update: What Actually Changed
Bambu Lab released a substantial update for the X2D, focused on improving speed, reliability, and overall usability. This is not just a minor firmware bump—it adds support for new hardware, expands AI-based monitoring, and refines core printing behavior.
Hardware and Performance
The update introduces support for a filament switching adapter designed for dual-nozzle systems. It allows cleaner integration between AMS and dual extruders, improving multi-material workflows.
Support for a high-flow hotend has also been added, enabling higher print speeds when using the optional upgrade. In addition, a new “print while drying” feature allows filament to be dried during active prints, provided an external AMS power supply is used. Filament drying can now also be controlled remotely.
AI Detection and Monitoring
AI-based monitoring has been expanded significantly. Error pop-ups now include live camera snapshots, giving immediate visual context when something goes wrong.
New detection systems include:
Print loosening detection to catch failed adhesion mid-print
Foreign object detection both on and beneath the heatbed
Improved nozzle clumping detection
Build plate detection is now enabled by default, preventing prints from starting if the plate is missing. Overall detection algorithms have been refined for better accuracy and fewer false positives.
Print Quality Improvements
Curve planning has been enhanced, resulting in smoother surfaces, especially on rounded geometry.
A new first layer calibration feature allows precise adjustment of nozzle-to-bed distance during printing. This is intended for advanced users who need fine control in varying environments.
Timelapse functionality has also been improved. Videos can now be stored directly on the printer without requiring external storage, and output stability has been enhanced.
Workflow and Usability
The onboarding experience for new users has been redesigned, making initial setup and first prints more straightforward.
Error messages now include detailed explanations through HMS integration, making troubleshooting easier.
Printing workflows have been simplified with new options to send files directly to the printer’s internal storage and start prints without a USB drive. This also works in LAN-only mode.
A new PIN-based binding system allows the printer to be connected without requiring both devices to be on the same network.
Additional usability improvements include screen brightness control and updated demo models with better print quality.
Maintenance and Safety
Several features target maintenance and operational safety:
A motor disable mode for easier manual adjustments and repairs
A maintenance mode that allows heating components without the hotend installed
Toolhead cover detection to prevent unsafe operation
A low-power heatbed mode for environments with limited electrical capacity
Idle protection has also been improved, automatically cooling the heatbed when the printer is not in use.
Other Changes
The update adds Russian language support, improves camera firmware and image quality, and includes general system, network, and stability improvements along with bug fixes.
This update focuses on practical improvements rather than cosmetic changes. It increases printing speed with new hardware support, reduces failure rates through better detection systems, and simplifies workflows by removing common friction points like external storage and network limitations.
For most users, the biggest impact will come from improved reliability and automation, making the X2D easier to operate with less manual intervention.
